Are You REAL ID Ready? Make Sure You’re Cleared for Takeoff Before May 7, 2025
Planning a trip in 2025? There’s an important travel update you need to know: starting May 7, 2025, most travelers aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.
Whether you’re heading to a family wedding, extending your stay after a conference, or simply flying home, don’t get caught off guard at airport security.
✨ What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to strengthen the security of state-issued IDs. A REAL ID looks similar to your current license but includes a gold or black star (or your state’s equivalent). If you don’t see that mark, your ID may not be compliant.
🧳 Will I Need One?
Yes—unless you have a valid U.S. passport or another TSA-approved ID. You’ll need a REAL ID to:
- Board domestic flights
- Access federal facilities (including military bases)
- Comply with federal security regulations
🗂️ How to Get It
Visit your local DMV with the required documents, which usually include:
- ✅ Proof of identity (passport or birth certificate)
- ✅ Proof of Social Security number (SS card or W-2)
- ✅ Two proofs of address (utility bill, lease, or bank statement)
- ✅ Legal name change documentation, if applicable
Each state has slightly different rules—check your DMV’s website to confirm. Bring originals or certified copies (no photocopies).
✈️ Already Have a Passport?
You’re good to fly—but many people prefer a REAL ID so they don’t have to carry their passport on shorter domestic trips. It’s a convenient option to have on hand.
